Hidden Holiday Allergy Triggers

Table of Contents

It’s the holiday season! This means hot chocolate, gifts, and ALLERGIES! While food allergies are the most prominent this season, many other allergy triggers go unnoticed. The allergists at NY Allergy & Sinus Centers are here to expose these hidden allergy triggers to make sure everyone has a safe holiday season.

Fireplace Smoke/ Ash

While fireplaces create a warm and calming atmosphere, wood-burning fireplaces produce smoke and ash that can trigger an asthma attack. These allergens can also cause symptoms such as headaches, watery eyes, and aggravated noses. For an allergy-friendly atmosphere, skip lighting the fireplace and opt for an electric one this holiday season.

Christmas Trees

Searching for the perfect Christmas tree to decorate is a fun holiday activity. However, for allergy sufferers, these Christmas trees may cause symptoms. A substance called terpene, found in the sap of trees, can cause skin allergies. There’s also the fact that these trees may carry pollen on them. If you suffer from allergic rhinitis, we suggest buying an artificial tree. It may not be authentic, but at least you’ll enjoy the holiday without sneezing or itching.

Friends and Family

The holidays are for spending time with friends and family. However, sometimes you must be cautious around loved ones. Hugs and kisses from friends and family can be dangerous. People can unknowingly carry allergens such as foods, smoke, and pollen. Many allergies are airborne which means people can experience symptoms by being exposed to allergens in the air. Be sure to update friends and family on your allergies and kindly ask them to refrain from eating anything you are allergic to. Also, it’s best to set a ‘no smoking’ rule.

Dust and Dander

It’s almost impossible to completely rid a home of dust and dander, so you’ll probably experience allergy symptoms this season. Even when a pet isn’t in the same room, you may still experience symptoms from dander around the home. Instead of trying to get your home squeaky clean this holiday, take the appropriate measures to reduce dust and dander in your home such as using a dehumidifier and investing in allergy-proof furniture covers.
